St. Barbara, welcoming icon
There is a stand with an icon welcoming visitors at the entrance of almost every Orthodox church. In St. Barbara's case, it is an icon of Christ blessing those who seek his word. What is interesting here, however, is the cloth on which the icon is placed. This crochet and cross-stitched cloth does not follow any pattern that might be canonically established. It is a typical Russian or Ukrainian traditional embroidery of stylized flowers in red and green on white linnen. A secular traditional item such as an embroidered cloth has been blended with religious artifacts in a whole, to recreate the atmosphere of a typical church in Eastern Slavonic lands.
